Capsaicin is the chemical found in chili peppers that burns your tongue. It is available in over-the-counter and prescription creams and lotions which can be used to treat pain conditions such as arthritis, shingles and overworked muscles and joints. It works by reducing a chemical substance found in the nerve endings that causes pain and it interferes with the transmission of pain signals to the brain. While many people find the product useful, others report that it appears to become less effective over time. Some people are unable to tolerate the burning sensation capsaicin produces.
